Spacebaby Story

Spacebaby emerges from the darkness of our unconscious bearing gifts of truth and self reflection. For as long as I can remember I've had a fascination with religious iconography and its ability to transport us to a world of spirituality and meaning. Raised in a Catholic/Latino household imagery was a fundamental part in understanding not only the religious aspect of where I came from but also the history and cultural identity that emanates from the power of iconography. Inspired in "El Niño Dios", which in Catholic tradition brings gifts of hope and spiritual renewal, Spacebaby bears gifts of truth and self reflection. Spacebaby is a three dimensional vinyl sculpture consisting of three elements, the infant, the astronaut helmet with reflective visor and the golden egg. The mirrored visor is an essential element to the surreal experience of Spacebaby engaging the viewer through their reflection. I work with the element of reflection both for the visual experience and also as a symbol for "self-reflection" enabling a more direct and personal interaction with the sculpture. In keeping with traditional Catholic iconography Spacebaby becomes a conduit connecting us with inner truth, however, this time as a secular work of art.

Behind the Sculpture

If you marry the ordered to the chaos, you produce the divine child, the supreme meaning beyond meaning and meaninglessness.
